Addressing diversity requires adaptations; such measures
should also be available to teaching staff
to facilitate their work should any special circumstances arise.
Students classified as having
specific educational support needs (NEAE/NEE)
will retain these characteristics as they mature.
It would be highly valuable for companies to consider
implementing supportive measures for them, as well as to encourage entrepreneurship,
enabling them to launch their own business ventures
and develop their autonomy.
I recall a student with exceptional abilities.
At the initial guidance meeting,
I was informed that he was officially classified as high capabilities.
"In which areas does he excel?" I asked.
"We don't know;
academically, his grades aren't remarkable."
Then the history teacher told me: "He listens to Pink Floyd! He’s a bit of a culture buff;
I have really interesting conversations with him. He spends his breaks reading and struggles to make friends."
He also mentioned that the student had submitted some short films—
films that looked like the work of a cult director,
simply because they were so eccentric.
The student loved music—and lectures!
Lectures on architecture and archaeological sites; he was obsessed with maps!
At school, they had given him lots of large, old maps—
the kind that used to be rolled out on the blackboard—
and he was delighted with them.
One day, he brought a folder of drawings to class; they were maps—
just maps, maps, and more maps.
He could memorized and reproduce maps—like a satellite, like Google Maps—
capturing the rivers, the geographical features,
and the mapped outlines of the coastlines.
And in art class, he would only draw maps.
He would get distressed if he had to do other creative tasks—
he’d shake his head!
As if saying "no, no, no" (he struggled to let things flow).
I remember when he refused to cut up an encyclopedia to make a collage.
He loved books so much that he just couldn't do it!
He was learning to play the guitar;
I think he felt comfortable with music because of the structure—
because of the rhythmic structure.
He had a very strong sense of justice.
And this sometimes caused him distress, because in schools, you have to manage a lot of emotions.
They are spaces where you have to coexist with many classmates,
yet he didn't really click with anyone!
He would bring books from the Spanish Golden Age to class!
The boy was on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum.
He was gifted—with truly astonishing abilities!
When I met with his mother, she didn't want to focus much on the autism label;
instead, she spoke of his extreme sensitivity—which was absolutely true.
Well, the student made a titanic effort to fit in, and he did so
by imitating his classmates' behavior so they would see him as one of them.
The others did nothing—not only did they do nothing,
but they also labeled him a weirdo.
And so, a boy who was gifted, who read, who had intellectual interests
and a strong sense of justice,
had to learn to act like a jerk just to be accepted.
He learned to act like a jerk, just so some jerk would put a hand on his shoulder
and tell him, "You're one of us."
These are "social tools"—or the development of "social skills"—
which consist of imitating what others do.
They should have looked to *him* as an example!
Not the other way around!
The history teacher (the one who talked about the atomic bomb)
used to ask me, "what about the guaje?" (*guaje* means "kid" in Asturian)—
well, I was a bit like that when I was little!
