While traveling through Peru in 2024, I was drawn to the weathered walls of an ancient monument. As I approached, I noticed a distant landscape framed by a narrow opening in the stone. At that moment, the doorway became far more than an architectural detail—it became a symbol of possibility.
The scene awakened memories of my adolescence and early adulthood, when I dreamed of seeing a world that once seemed beyond reach. Growing up in the Soviet Union, I longed to travel freely, discover distant countries, learn new languages, meet people from different cultures, and experience the simple joy of speaking with them in their own language. Beyond every visible border, I imagined a life filled with curiosity, freedom, and human connection.
Years later, that dream became my own journey. Having found my home in Canada, I look back with gratitude. Canada has given me the opportunity to live in a country where diversity is celebrated, individuality is respected, and people are encouraged to build a peaceful and dignified life through their own dedication, work, and dreams.
This photograph is not simply about an ancient doorway. It is about every threshold we dare to cross. Some doors are visible, carved in stone by history. Others exist only within ourselves, waiting for the courage to open them. The most meaningful journeys often begin long before we take the first step.
