Peace begins long before the last shot is fired—it begins in the human heart.
The First Day of Peace is a vision of hope born in the midst of a war that has endured for years.
As I painted this work, I imagined a day that had not yet arrived—but one that I believe will come: the first day of peace. The first morning when the sirens fall silent. The first sunrise when children wake without fear. The first moment when families separated by war can embrace again.
This painting is also deeply personal. Since February 2022, because of the war in Ukraine, I have been unable to return to my homeland to see my elderly parents. Every passing season reminds me that time is precious, and every day apart is a day that can never be recovered. Like millions of Ukrainians, I carry the quiet hope of the moment when I will finally be able to hold my family in my arms again.
The luminous Bird of Paradise rises toward the light, becoming a symbol of renewal and reconciliation. It embodies the resilience of the human spirit and the promise that, even after immense suffering, beauty can bloom again.
Soft whites, radiant yellows, and vibrant blues replace the darkness of conflict with the colors of hope and new beginnings. Expressive, richly textured brushstrokes convey movement, freedom, and the quiet joy of a future reclaimed.
This painting is not about the end of a battle. It is about the beginning of peace.
I imagine people filling the streets with tears of joy, embracing strangers as if they were family, dancing together, sharing meals, singing, and celebrating the simple miracle of being alive again. It is a celebration of human dignity, compassion, forgiveness, and our shared longing to live without fear.
The First Day of Peace expresses my deepest hope that this day will soon arrive—not only for Ukraine, but for every place in the world where people dream of laying down their burdens and beginning again.
