Created during a live painting performance at the Art en Cantal Festival (France, Summer 2025), Protector is a tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people in the face of war.
A monumental tree dominates the composition, bending beneath the invisible force of relentless bombardment. Its vast canopy stretches across the canvas like a protective shield, embracing the land below and standing between destruction and life. Though the tree is strained and wounded, it refuses to break. Its roots remain firmly anchored, embodying the determination of those who continue to defend their homeland despite overwhelming adversity.
Painted with vigorous palette-knife gestures and intense layers of acrylic, the work transforms the tree into more than a natural form—it becomes a living symbol of courage, endurance, and hope. The explosive reds, deep blues, luminous yellows, and dark shadows evoke both the violence of conflict and the unyielding spirit that survives within it.
Rather than depicting war directly, Protector speaks of the silent strength that endures through it. It is a visual metaphor for a nation that bends but does not surrender.
This painting expresses my hope that one day peace will return to Ukraine, allowing its people to live once again beneath skies free from war.
