Gioia Maria Aloisi is an Italian visual artist and photographer, born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and based in Milan. For more than thirty years, her research has explored the body, nature, and memory as vulnerable territories, exposed to wounding, transformation, and the possibility of rebirth.
Through photography, installation, painting, performance, organic materials, manual intervention, and artificial intelligence, she creates works in which sensory perception becomes a means of knowledge and connection. Particular attention is devoted to ecology, care, identity, and perceptual inclusion.
A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, she has taught at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and the University of Milano-Bicocca, where she has led the Non-Verbal Communication Laboratory since 2006.
She has taken part in international exhibitions, awards, and artist residencies across Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, China, and Brazil. In 2016, she was a finalist in the Arte Laguna Prize with the work “War to War.” She later received an Arte Laguna Special Prize for an artist residency at the Hong Museum, which concluded in 2025 with an exhibition and the acquisition of several works for the museum’s collection.
Selected ProjectsDreaming Flowers, 2025
Developed during an artist residency between Zhuji and Shanghai, the project comprises sixteen works combining original photography, artificial intelligence, digital processing, and manual intervention.
The “Dreaming Flowers” series consists of limited-edition Fine Art prints on museum-grade Hahnemühle paper, created through photographic layering followed by painterly and digital reworking.
“Dreaming Flowers Black” comprises seven monotypes on Chinese paper, produced through gestures inspired by calligraphy and ink painting. The project was presented on November 13, 2025, at the Hongyi Art Museum in Shanghai.
Ancestral Echoes, 2025
Created during a residency at BigCi in the Australian Blue Mountains, “Ancestral Echoes” unfolds as a dialogue between nature, the body, memory, and perception.
The project includes the installation “A Message for You,” made with fabrics marked by the resin of Angophora trees in the landscape of Bilpin, the performance “Nature, Senses and Emotions,” and a series of monotypes and works on rice paper.
Rosso VIVO
An environmental art project developed within the woodland landscape of Ancarano, in Abruzzo, using wood, pigments, and natural materials.
The installation makes the wound of the forest visible and invites reflection on the fragility of ecosystems and on human responsibility towards the environment.
