This artwork is part of my Dalmatia Series, inspired by the landscapes, traditions, and unique spirit of the Croatian Mediterranean.
In Dalmatia, the bura is not merely a wind. Like the jugo, it deeply influences the mood, rhythm, and everyday life of the people who live along the coast. Yet unlike the jugo, which is often associated with heaviness, restlessness, and melancholy, the bura is welcomed. It is cold and powerful, but it brings clarity, fresh air, and a sense of renewal. After the bura passes, the sky becomes crystal clear, revealing the landscape in its purest form.
Bura Before the Storm captures the moment of silence and anticipation before its arrival. The sea, the sky, and the land seem suspended between stillness and movement, creating a feeling of tension and inner energy. Rather than depicting a specific place, the painting seeks to convey the emotional experience of nature preparing for transformation.
Through expressive brushstrokes and vibrant color, I explore the powerful relationship between the Mediterranean landscape and human emotion. The approaching bura becomes a metaphor for those moments in life when change is inevitable—moments that may appear harsh at first, yet ultimately bring clarity, strength, and renewal.
This work celebrates the raw beauty, energy, and resilience that define both Dalmatia and the people who call it home.
