Stillness and Motion, Balance and Imbalance, Thing-in-itself and Phenomenon, Life and Death, Perfection and Imperfection...
Conflicting things structure the world, and CRADLE is rocking between two opposites.
This work is conceptualised not just as a decorative object like a candle holder or flower vase, but as an instrument for experiencing a trio of the materiality of quartz glass and stainless steel, the immateriality of physical phenomena such as reflection, refraction and dispersion of light, and the mathematical proportions of its shape.
In order to realise this concept, we have maximized the physical properties of the materials with a combination of geometric shapes based on optical and structural calculations.
The artwork is composed of two layer structures —fused quartz glass and stainless steel—.
Its arc shape based on mathematical ratios makes the artwork rock like a cradle.
The refraction of light by the fused quartz, with its high purity and transparency, produces complex spectral effects.
The mirror surface inside the stainless steel acts as a screen that reflects physical phenomena such as the caustics of light, the ripple of liquid and the flickering of flame, as well as the surrounding landscape.
Through this series of works, we are attempting to enhance our aesthetic perception of materials, proportions and physical phenomena lurking in our everyday lives.
