CONCEPT
This piece belongs to our series of artworks "GEOMETRY OF RESTRAINT", where we delve into the geometric interaction between inscribed and circumscribed forms through the concept of restraint.
Positioned at the core, a sphere is encircled and constrained by three circumscribing structures.
This composition evokes a paradoxical impression: on one hand, implying a sphere gliding along an arc, and on the other, highlighting that its movement is bounded at the three points of tangency with the surrounding forms.
This duality elicits a sense of tension at these points of contact, underscoring a delicate balance between motion and stillness.
The three voids created between the sphere and the circumscribing structures act as a catalyst for contemplation on contrasting concepts, such as presence and absence, or materiality and immateriality.
Each void has been precisely calculated to be of equal area, accentuating the sensation as though the sphere hovers tranquilly within the void.
Considering its physical attributes, the pale blue-gray acrylic emphasizes the curved surfaces of the circumscribing structures.
Meanwhile, other areas preserve the inherent red hue of the raw canvas, resulting in each color and texture enhancing and resonating with one another.
Structurally, the interplay of the meticulous design of a foundational wooden frame in accordance with architectural structural mechanics and the innate stretchability of the linen canvas generates a curved plane that manifests the traces of applied tension, thereby shaping the three-dimensional form of the artwork.
This construct embodies a reframing of the very essence of planarity in painting, striving to shift the focus of artistic intervention from mere plane to the expanded realm of the spatial.
In essence, this artwork explores how objects, shapes and space itself interact and influence one another in our perception, through the various elements of contradiction generated by conflicting relationships such as tangency and circumscription, free motion and restrained state.
