Concept
This work is conceived as a way of playing with shapes and colours that exist purely as themselves, rather than as symbols or representations of anything.
This polyptych, the first work in our series of artworks "MISSHAP(P)EN CIRCLE", consists of 13 panels corresponding to 13 regular polygons — Trigon, Tetragon, Pentagon, Hexagon, Heptagon, Octagon, Enneagon, Decagon, Hendecagon, Dodecagon, Tridecagon, Heptadecagon and Digon —.
Each "Misshapen Circle" is based on a regular polygon inscribed in a circle as its archetype, and is formed by multiple arcs generated through adapting a set of simple mathematical operations to the inscribed polygons.
In other words, the creative process we have planned and practised in this work is not to draw the shapes in a subjective and intentional way, but to establish rules of mathematical manipulation which determines the shapes in an auto-generative way.
In fact, all of the arcs drawn in this work can be drafted using only a compass and a straightedge and, in theoretical terms, can be reproduced by anyone.
As for the colour scheme of each panel, it is similar to a certain type of a musical composition, with the emphasis above all on mutual and overall rhythm and harmony, and we try not to evoke any kind of specific meaning and emotion.
With this approach, we attempt to create shapes and colours that can exist as themselves, independently of us as creators.
