About Jeu.
Jeu. is an art duo consisting of architect Hideaki Nishimura and artist Yumi Toyama.
At the core of our creations, we go beyond merely portraying specific subjects or emotions.
Rather, we remain deeply mesmerized by the intricate rhythms, patterns, and structures lurking in the depths of the realms such as mathematics, physics, and sound — which, to us, resonate as the enigmatic echoes of the universe.
With a playful curiosity, we aspire to translate these notions into a conceptual landscape as our creations in the realm of the spatial.
For instance, in our "Geometry of Restraint", "Dimensional Landscape", and "2.5D Leather Painting/Sculpture" series, we craft constructs that transcend traditional dimensionality.
The meticulous design of a three-dimensional frame, in accordance with architectural structural mechanics, integrated with the innate stretchability and plasticity of materials such as linen and leather, results in curved planes, embossed surfaces, and relief-like patterns emerging.
In other series like "Construction in Perception" and "Geometrically Manipulated Painting", we experiment with fundamental shapes like circles and polygons, delving into the interplay between form and color, enhancing and resonating with our sensory perceptions.
In addition to these artworks, drawing on our architectural background, we design spatial installations, furnishings, and objects, as well as visuals and videos, both as our own artistic pursuits and as bespoke projects for clients, leveraging our expertise in construction materials, computer modeling, and structural dynamics.
In essence, it is the joy and wonder experienced when abstract laws, structures and mechanisms of the world are manifested into our works through artistic medium that truly drives our creative endeavors.
Artist: Hideaki NISHIMURA
Hideaki NISHIMURA, a first-class licensed architect in Japan, specializes not only in architecture but also in the realm of spatial creations, such as installations and land art.
After obtaining his master's degree in architecture and urban planning in Italy, and while working on various architectural and urban projects in France, he gradually immersed himself in manifesting principles and phenomena describable in mathematics and physics—such as the interplay of space and time, the circulation of forces in nature, and the tension between internal and external objects—in his artistic expressions.
His exploration in projecting mathematical and physical principles into his creations is reflected in pieces like "BALANCE | IMBALANCE (https://landartgenerator.org/blagi/archives/3554)".
For him, creation transcends mere self-expression or representation; it's about perceiving and playing with the structural melodies in space.
Artist: Yumi TOYAMA
Educated in oil painting and silverpoint drawing, Yumi TOYAMA transitioned into the luxury fashion scene in Paris, serving as a colorist and nail artist.
Celebrated by major fashion houses including VOGUE, CHANEL, CHRISTIAN DIOR, and CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN, her nail art pieces
(www.instagram.com/v.uej/) are characterized by their delicate colors and minimalist sculptural expressions.
Her expertise has been sought for diverse projects, encompassing brand advertisements, magazine photoshoots, manicure workshops, and beauty consultations.
As she deepened her experience in the luxury fashion world, however, her enthusiasm for contributing to visual aesthetics and brand stories began to wane, and she was increasingly drawn to abstract constructs rooted in mathematical principles, free from any touch of symbolism or storytelling.
In particular, she became engrossed in the journey of geometric construction drawn solely with a compass and straightedge, and delving into colors that resonated with those shapes.
Building on her insight in color theory and her precise craftsmanship honed in beauty and fashion, she probes into chromatic and geometric structures in both two and three dimensions, drawn more to the universal principles embedded in everyday life than to representational narratives or depictions.
