CONCEPT
This piece, part of our artwork series entitled "CONSTRUCTION IN PERCEPTION", embarks on an exploration of perceptual constructs that, while unable to take form in our physically constrained world, find their existence solely within the realm of cognition.
Known in mathematical circles as 'impossible figures', we construct these forms with a combination of precisely curated, limited shapes and color schemes, allowing us to investigate how contours, transitions, depths—space, time, and dimensionality—interact with our interpretation of the world.
This illusory figure, with its shifting orientation and spatial interrelationship in response to the viewer’s cognitive processing, exploits our innate desire to interpret two-dimensional visuals as reflections of the three-dimensional world, evoking a sense of wonder, confusion, humor, unease, and curiosity.
Carefully segmented into 11 levels of black and white tones, the artwork conjures an optical illusion of depth that maintains a flawless smoothness when appreciated from a suitable distance, despite being painted with a restrained palette of tonalities.
Furthermore, using this technique which we term "Stepped Gradient", the interplay of geometric shapes and the steps of brightness not only embodies spatial elements such as depth but also conveys a sense of time, as if capturing a multitude of moments within a single frame, reminiscent of a photographic sequence.
In this way, through the marriage of form and monochrome, the artwork ingeniously deceives the viewer's eye and understanding.
At the heart of this series, we engage in a playful exploration of the essence of space, time, and dimensionality through optical and logical manipulations in the seemingly mundane act of depicting three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane, challenging the boundaries of our sensory comprehension of the physical world and our grasp of reality.
