Self portrait with you!
While
the self-portrait used to be the privilege of the talented painters,
today the "Selfie" genre offers all of us the opportunity
to reproduce ourselves with the development of technology.
Art
history dates the birth of the first self-portraits to the 14th and
15th centuries. The antecedent of this is self-presentation by the
painter on a church fresco or in the background of other people's
portraits.
With the invention and subsequent spread of
photography, the number of reproductions made by people of themselves
increases exponentially, the limit is the starry sky! Recordings of
ourselves and the use of various filters on mobile phones lead to a
distortion of a person's self-knowledge, self-examination has opened
a completely new chapter in our lives.
While a mirror gives an
"exact" reproduction only for ourselves, we can present our
perceived or real self-definition to the world through the channels
of the Internet and social media. Even if we dress stiffly, sexyly,
or aloofly, this in itself only defines our appearance.
In my
work, as a sign of my respect for the masters, I sketched myself on a
mirror dating back to the 17th-18th century and scratched the lines
in my cloak while working. For those who look at the picture, I hold
a mirror and they can see themselves with me.
This is a strange,
disturbing approach to self-portraits, where the artist and the
visitor appear together in the picture, in an old and dilapidated,
but beautiful frame, imbued with the spirit of the past and the
fashion culture of the present.
