The first time I saw Marie Braquemond’s painting, On the Terrace, 1880, it completely resonated with me. Here is the woman is at a mid-day luncheon, clearly the third wheel at the occasion. While couple sits close to each on the right of the painting, the woman on the left is very disconnected from the event.
This image resonated with me the first time I saw it and reminded me of being a third wheel when I hung out with my married girlfriends. Never feeling quite part of the group, there is an awkwardness I can’t avoid. My complete comfort with my single status regresses as I am alone feeling the connection, they have with each other. Their entire lives revolve around each other and the world they have created, while mine is quite different.
