The eclectic styles of this Middle Eastern inspired “Grande Odalisque,” is a portrait of a reclining nude, Concubine, breaking Ingres’s Neoclassical styling, shifting toward Romanticism with the woman’s elongated distorted proportions. Met with criticism Ingres's favor of long sinuating, sensual curves, and total disregard for anatomical proportions, pointed out the distorted concept of a woman whose main objective was merely for the sultan’s pleasure.
In my own Ingres interpretation, I have pondered my ability to get a date and what it would look like if he came home to my house with my mass accumulated, not-so-well behaved animals jumping up and getting into everything. A little cheeky, I admit, but I could only imagine my dogs jumping up on our bed or a lost snake making its debut in the middle of a romantic moment.
