In 1961 Piero Manzoni created one of the most desecrating piece of arts ever realized, the famous “Artist’s Shit” in a can. 60 years later, I'm paying tribute to the author of this art icon with its digital conversion, dematerializing both content and container.
Manzoni’s research, focused on the expression of corporality in various ways, triggers my work which investigates digital corporality in its inputs and outputs, reflecting on their value and on the metabolic process in itself.
Manzoni decided to sell the tins valuing them on par with the price of gold: 30 gr of “product” for 30 gr of gold. I'm following his example selling 30 Megabytes of “Crypto Shit” for the equivalent of 30 gr of gold in crypto currency.
The label’s graphic follows the original layout apart from the decorative texture which translates into binary code my name and surname, Federica Sutti, creating an updated and contemporary pattern. Personal identity and artistic production get similarly digested and converted in data.
This piece was released on Saturday 29th May with a “drop” on a Bakery Swap NFT Marketplace and price is updated daily accordingly to gold and BAKE ( BAKE is a crypto currency) fluctuations.
“Crypto Art Phenomenon, first surprised me and then intrigued me, it makes me think about the evolution of collectionism and of the the collector’s profile. Now files - which are nothing but data containers - are collectibles and desirable. The virtual as collectible would have been inconceivable up to 10 years ago. The undesirable became desirable similarly to the famous Piero Manzoni tin.”
