I'm fascinated by the people who quietly shape the rhythm of iconic French Riviera places like Ruhl Plage. While some come to switch off, others are just getting started. While some drink, others run drinks. Although they share the same view, their experiences are worlds apart.
Rather than depicting a specific moment, I wanted to shift the focus towards this lesser-seen side of the French Riviera. The striped parasols, deep azure sea and Mediterranean light become graphic elements that celebrate not only the beauty of the Côte d'Azur, but the people whose daily rituals help define its atmosphere.
This painting was hand-painted with acrylic on canvas, using simplified forms, bold colour and a contemporary graphic language to distil the atmosphere of its environment. Designed to live on its own or alongside its companion piece, Off Duty – Ruhl Plage, Nice, it explores the other half of a shared story about the contrasting experiences that unfold under the same parasols.
