This wall sculpture, # Smoke VS Mirrors, is a part of a series titled "Selfless in a Selfie World." I shoot photography throughout selfie destinations of ordinary articles that are representative of the selfie realm and attribute them significant meaning. For this artwork, I shot lingerie for sale by the extravagant port of Saint Tropez. It’s the token for “mirrors” to emblematize social media’s hyper-sexualization of the body to gain attention and artificial intelligence’s ability to create false perfected versions of someone’s actual, natural form.
I juxtapose the photographed imagery with a large scale painted symbol of the contrary selfless state. This is of our intrinsic, higher self, based on our essence identity rather than that of a form based identity. I interpreted “smoke” as a symbol for the antithesis of mirrors for it’s a stage of transmutation between the physical into the invisible.
This artwork is an invitation for the world to reflect on how, amidst digital embellishments and image perfecting, we can transmute physicality while still living in this third dimension.
