New Water Album is a series of twelve works inspired by traditional Chinese landscape ink paintings by Yuan Ma, a renowned artist of the Southern Song Dynasty. Reinterpreting these classical works through a modern, sculptural approach, artist Dongli Ma uses crystal resin as the primary medium to recreate iconic waterscapes—such as the vast ripples of the Yangtze River and the shimmering surface of Dongting Lake—evoking the psychological and spiritual essence of China’s great rivers, lakes, and bodies of water.
Each piece is displayed on a softly lit lightbox. When illuminated, the translucent resin brings the works to life, with flowing light and shadows animating the surface, inviting viewers into a meditative, contemporary landscape experience.
With this series, Dongli Ma explores the dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression. By transforming material, light, and space, he breathes new temporal dimensions into classical imagery, offering a fresh perceptual and emotional encounter with ancient themes in a modern exhibition context.
