I was born in a small city of the Western China. Since I could hold a pencil, I started to draw. Before going to college, I was madly cling to traditional oiling painting and just wanted to focus on oiling painting. When I studied in my art school, I found a board perspective to see the world and art and got to know lots of new materials. I believe that ideas are the most important to art, while I also believe that there is only one kind of materials that can give the optimal presentation for different details in an art piece. Then I started to use various of materials. I don’t care if it cost much, if it is new or old, or if it is popular or not. The only reason that I choose is because it is the best one to explain what I want to say. Thus, my works includes oil paintings, installation and sculpture, as long as the way or material is the best way to explain my idea. I still love traditional art, including Chinese traditional art and Western art, however, I think the contemporary art should reflect the development of age and generation of human civilization. Artists also should have open minds and combine national factors and international factors to explain their works. Thus, my works include traditional Chinese factors, contemporary factors and high-technology factors, using new perspectives and new ways.
On August 28, 2022, "Light Source" Ma Dongli's solo exhibition’s opening reception was hosted at Cheng Contemporary Art Center in 798 Art District. The main medium of the works in this exhibition is the flashlight. In the overall darkened exhibition space, the flashlights of each group of installations flashed a cold metallic luster in the dark.
