Gatekeepers are the first series of "The Prophecy of the New Myth" series. This series features oil paintings, namely Gatekeeper I (Right) and Gatekeeper II (Left). In the past, people found solace in religion, but nowadays it seems they have embraced technology and disregarded the spiritual aspects of their lives. When individuals place their trust in physical tools and materials rather than religion, do they truly feel secure and fulfilled? "The Prophecy of the New Myth" series aims to depict the emergence of new gods, incorporating technological elements into a religious framework.
The Gatekeeper painting draws inspiration from Chinese traditional folk art. On the eve of the Chinese New Year, people hang a pair of Gatekeepers on their doors. These figures, armed and mounted on fierce animals, are believed to offer protection. The artist have reimagined modern-day "gatekeepers" by portraying today's lifeguards—police officers and firefighters—based on the traditional gatekeeper painting.
Gatekeeper I (Right) represents a modern gatekeeper, the firefighter. The background features a Cyan Dragon, a symbol of power in traditional Chinese tales. The figure's appearance resembles that of a traditional gatekeeper, but I have incorporated numerous modern high-tech tools into the artwork. For instance, the gatekeeper's head is replaced with a camera, and they are depicted driving a vehicle.
Gatekeeper II (Left) represents a modern gatekeeper, the police officer. The background showcases a White Tiger, a symbol of power in traditional Chinese tales. Similar to Gatekeeper I, this figure retains the appearance of a traditional gatekeeper but incorporates various modern high-tech tools. For example, the gatekeeper's head is replaced with a camera, and they are depicted driving a vehicle and using a cell phone.
Additionally, I have displayed copies of these artworks on the doors of prominent galleries in Beijing, without obtaining permission or engaging in any communication. This action serves as a means of communication with galleries that hold authority in the art world, albeit through non-communication. The act of "posting" aims to establish its own value without the need for recognition from authoritative figures.
Gatekeepers was selected to be exhibited at an International Exhibition of 15th Arte Laguna Prize in Mauritius in 2021.
