Last of the Big Fish Stories reflects on humanity’s insatiable exploitation of the ocean. The "big fish" is both literal and metaphorical: a reference to overfishing, but also to the ego-driven illusion that we are dominant, and separate from the ecosystems we are steadily eroding. The regal cat-figure is a symbol of entitlement, and superiority, but it is also worth noting that we feed our domestic pet cats with fish pulled from collapsing marine habitats, often caught using destructive trawling practices.
In a world where the oceans are running dry and environmental consequences grow harder to ignore, this sculpture suggests that we may be the last generation able to tell ‘Big Fish” stories — and that the next ones may not end so triumphantly.
