Title
DESCARTES — The Rationalist (Series 2/5)
Concept
DESCARTES — The Rationalist is part of Architectures of Thought, an ongoing sculptural series that explores the foundations of Western philosophy through contemporary sculpture.
The work reimagines René Descartes as a monument situated between classical humanism and the digital age. One side of the portrait recalls traditional stone carving, while the exposed cerebral structure references neural networks, computational systems, and contemporary models of cognition.
By merging historical monumentality with digital sculptural processes, the work examines the origins of rational thought and its continuing influence on technology, knowledge, and human consciousness. Developed through native 3D modeling, the sculpture is conceived for translation into marble using robotic fabrication in dialogue with traditional sculptural craftsmanship.
Part philosopher, part architectural system, DESCARTES — The Rationalist reflects on the enduring relationship between human reason and the technological frameworks that increasingly shape contemporary life.
