Title
DESCARTES — The Rationalist (Series 1/5)
Concept
DESCARTES — The Rationalist is part of Architectures of Thought, an ongoing sculptural series investigating the foundations of Western thought through contemporary sculptural language.
The work reimagines René Descartes as a hybrid monument positioned between Renaissance humanism and computational culture. One half of the portrait references classical stone carving, while the exposed cerebral structure evokes neural networks, algorithmic systems, and contemporary models of cognition.
The sculpture examines the emergence of modern rationalism and the transition from inherited authority toward autonomous reasoning. Conceived through a native 3D sculptural workflow, the work is designed for robotic translation into marble through multi-axis fabrication processes combined with traditional hand-finishing techniques.
By merging historical monumentality with digital fabrication, the project investigates how philosophy continues to shape contemporary perceptions of knowledge, technology, and human consciousness.
Medium: Biopolyamide resin, marble, digital sculptural system.
Dimensions: 107.63 × 100 × 77.82 cm.
