Title
DESCARTES — The Rationalist (Series 1/5)
Concept
DESCARTES — The Rationalist is part of Architectures of Thought, an ongoing sculptural series that reinterprets influential philosophers and cultural visionaries through contemporary sculptural language.
The work presents René Descartes as a monument suspended between classical humanism and the technological age. One side of the portrait recalls the permanence of traditional stone sculpture, while the exposed cerebral architecture evokes neural networks, computational systems, and contemporary models of cognition.
Exploring the emergence of modern rationalism, the sculpture reflects on the historical shift from inherited authority to independent thought. Developed through a native 3D sculptural process and conceived for translation into marble through robotic fabrication and hand-finishing, the work bridges centuries of sculptural tradition with contemporary modes of production.
Part philosopher, part architectural system, DESCARTES — The Rationalist examines how ideas continue to shape our understanding of knowledge, technology, and human consciousness.
