Commission for INTERNATIONALER WALDKUNSTPFAD 2022, Darmstadt, GERMANY
Materials: nylon fabric, burnt timber & tree root
Concept
This site-responsive memorial intervention highlights the importance of each individual tree in maintaining a balanced ecology within our environments, whilst acknowledging the insecurity of our forests' future from the rapidly increasing threats of climate change and human destruction.
Its site, deep in the forests surrounding the city of Darmstadt, was devastated during WWII and the evidence still scar the forest floor. A strong sense of its traumatic history influenced the outcome of the work combined with the impacts of recent droughts on the forest.
Description
A scorched tree root is contained within the chard timber structure that partially sinks into its site, encased within a transparent fabric jacket. The tree trunk emerges from the jacket and is buried in a pile of soil, resembling a fresh grave.
