PALMER BIENNIAL 2018, South Australia
This site-specific environmental installation occupies the location of a derelict coal miner's cottage nestled high in the hills of South Australia. Encased within a transparent fabric coat, the remains of the stone chimney breast are visible, accompanied by water-filled plastic bags piled in the hearth. A lace-like plaster stencil traces the floor plan of the original house. This intervention is inspired by my ongoing research into the social, environmental, and historical impacts of non-renewable mining. It explores the transient nature of mining communities while emphasising the intrinsic value of 'home'.
