I Guardiani

La collezione I Guardiani rappresenta oggetti d'arredo-sculture la cui essenza è la connessione tra estetica e funzione raccontando un viaggio attraverso l'arte primordiale e le credenze relative alla cristalloterapia tramandate nella cultura popolare sin dall'antichità. Questo progetto vuole essere una sintesi tra il passato e il presente, promuove il contatto con la Natura e con noi stessi attraverso gli elementi naturali. Da sempre l’essere umano ricorre al contatto diretto con Madre Terra attraverso l’utilizzo delle gemme che Essa mette a disposizione per cercare risposte e soluzioni ai propri problemi. Il progetto esplora l’uso dei cristalli e delle pietre curative, pratica nota fin dall’origine dell’uomo che viene qui ripresa in un'ottica contemporanea.

Tre sono gli esemplari di Guardiani, preziose statue che custodiscono la casa grazie all'energia che viene trasmessa attraverso le pietre di cui sono costituiti. L'ispirazione principale fa riferimento alle forme antropomorfe di sculture antiche che venivano erette a scopo celebrativo, in particolare, l'idea proviene dai moai dell'Isola di Pasqua. I moai, scolpiti dai polinesiani nel lontano 1000 d.C., fanno parte di un grande complesso cerimoniale (più di 600 statue nell'isola). Nella maggior parte dei casi si tratta di statue monolitiche, cioè ricavate e scavate da un unico blocco di tufo vulcanico; il significato più comune tramandato dagli attuali discendenti maori è quello di essere monoliti augurali portatori di benessere e prosperità dove volgono lo sguardo. Per questo nell'isola di Pasqua sono tutti rivolti verso l'interno, per proteggere la terra e coloro che l'abitavano.

Con I Guardiani si propone, quindi,  un processo di miniaturizzazione del design, che dalle enormi dimensioni  si trasforma in un design a portata d'uomo e della sua casa. Le linee utilizzate sono stilizzate, essenziali, ma anche intuitive ed empatiche: i volti disegnati e le sembianze mirano ad instaurare un contatto diretto con l'interlocutore cercando di trasmettere positività suscitando emozioni ludiche e di simpatia. Il corpo centrale, che è realizzato totalmente in metallo come le braccia, si incastona in una base di pietra dura, mentre pietre preziose più piccole, accuratamente scelte per doti energetiche, costituiscono gli occhi, la bocca e le mani. Questi oggetti possono essere utilizzati da soli, come soprammobili a scopo ornamentale, o come veri vasi per fiori. Osservano e vigilano sull'intera casa, portando fortuna e purificando gli ambienti.

La prima variante (dimensione in cm 42x46x17) è caratterizzata dall'utilizzo di Quarzo Bianco, Diaspro Rosso e Lapislazzuli.

Secondo gli antichi Greci il Quarzo Bianco era ghiaccio, formatosi a bassissime temperature mentre gli Sciamani delle tribù indigene lo definivano “Pietra di Luce”, ritenendo che provenisse direttamente dal cielo. Presso tutte le culture, questo cristallo è stato da sempre considerato un minerale dai poteri magici e terapeutici. Era spesso usato per curare malattie, per cacciare energie negative, e per infondere nella persona forza ed energia vitale. Dona calma, pace e serenità.

Il Diaspro Rosso, invece, è considerata la pietra che riaccende la passione e dona creatività. Aiuta a connettersi con la terra e ad aumentare la fertilità, donando anche forza e resistenza.

Il Lapislazzuli ha un colore blu intenso che ricorda quello del cielo mentre le venature color oro le stelle. Lapislazzuli significa "pietra azzurra", è infatti una delle pietre preziose blu più famose.  Tra le sue tante proprietà, note fin dal V secolo,  c’è quella di potenziare le capacità dell’intelletto, rendendo la mente più curiosa e vivace. Aiuta a far emergere in una persona il senso dell’amicizia, la compassione, l’onestà e a prendere atto delle proprie convinzioni. Nel buddismo è considerato addirittura uno  dei sette tesori. 

Nella seconda variante (dimensione in cm 46x31x18) sono utilizzati il Quarzo Bianco, la Malachite fiorita e l'Ametista.

La malachite è tra le pietre più conosciute, appare spesso all’interno delle leggende nel corso della storia. Rappresenta la seduzione, la bellezza e il senso estetico. Lo è stato per Iside per esempio, la più importante Dea egiziana o anche per Persefone, Dea greca della primavera. La malachite è per molti simbolo rigenerativo, perché il suo bellissimo verde ricorda la bellezza della natura. Assorbe le energie negative dall’ambiente e rafforza l'organismo facendo aumentare la consapevolezza di se stessi.

L’ametista era già nota ai tempi dell’antico Egitto e in Mesopotamia, dove veniva utilizzata per realizzare preziosi gioielli e sigilli. Anche greci e romani ne conoscevano la bellezza e le proprietà, tanto da realizzare coppe pregiate da cui assaporavano il vino. Secondo le credenze dell’epoca l’ametista contrastava l’ebrezza, infatti il termine greco améthystos significa “non ebbro”.  Secondo la cristalloterapia l’ametista possiede moltissime proprietà, prima tra tutte la capacità di allontanare gli incubi notturni incrementando l’attività onirica. Inoltre rafforza l’autocontrollo, l’autostima e la forza interiore; ha un effetto calmante e rassicurante.

Nella terza variante (dimensione in cm 32x16x14) sono utilizzate le Quarzo bianco, Quarzo rosa e pietra Celestina.

Il quarzo rosa è considerata la pietra della calma in quanto permette di rilassare la mente e serve ad affrontare le sfide della vita, aiuta a vivere con leggerezza. Il quarzo rosa veniva utilizzato anche in Egitto per preservare la giovinezza, la bellezza e l’amore. Aumenta la compassione, la tolleranza e la generosità. E’ una pietra che scioglie le tensioni e porta la persona a sentirsi un tutt’uno con l’Universo. Non a caso questo minerale viene considerato anche il cuore della Madre Terra.

La celestina, infine, deve il suo nome al colore e tradizionalmente era considerata un collegamento con i regni celesti. La celestina o celestite è una delle pietre più potenti quando si parla di connettersi ai regni spirituali. Questa pietra è molto amata anche da coloro che necessitano spesso di mitigare il caos della mente o calmare le proprie paure, dato che grazie alle vibrazioni ad alta frequenza che si propagano in ogni direzione, emette un’energia morbida e positiva favorendo la sensazione di pace.

Il corpo di tutti e tre i guardiani è realizzato in lamiera di metallo con finiture preziose: rame spazzolato, alluminio delabrè, ottone spazzolato e verderame. Inoltre sono utilizzate, a contrasto, le stesse finiture in versione lucida, per realizzare parte dei copricapi.

Il progetto fa riferimento anche al processo di realizzazione in quanto viene pensato in un'ottica di modularità con lo scopo di valorizzare l'utilizzo completo degli scarti e dei componenti per un ciclo più ecosostenibile della produzione.

Partendo infatti da un cilindro svasato si riescono ad ottenere due vasi del primo tipo con un semplice taglio longitudinale. Mentre per creare gli altri due guardiani (medio e piccolo per altezza) si procede come per il primo praticando, in aggiunta, un taglio trasversale ad altezza prestabilita da progetto. Così facendo si ottengono in totale altri quattro pezzi da utilizzare come corpi-base. 

Contemporaneità e antichità, tecnologia e natura, connessione con il passato e visione del presente sono i  temi principali che si vogliono esplorare con la progettazione di questi artefatti che diventano oggetti d'arredamento, vasi  sculture, esprimendo visivamente anima ed empatia: un insieme di relazioni che ci portano a riconnetterci con la natura e con la storia, e che non permettono una collocazione definitiva dell'oggetto, rimanendo in bilico tra arte e design.

The Guardians collection represents furnishing objects-sculptures whose essence is the connection between aesthetics and function, telling a journey through primordial art and the beliefs relating to crystal therapy handed down in popular culture since ancient times. This project aims to be a synthesis between the past and the present, it promotes contact with Nature and with ourselves through the natural elements. The human being has always resorted to direct contact with Mother Earth through the use of the gems she makes available to seek answers and solutions to their problems. The project explores the use of crystals and healing stones, a practice known since the origin of man, which is taken up here in a contemporary perspective.

There are three examples of Guardians, precious statues that guard the house thanks to the energy that is transmitted through the stones of which they are made. The main inspiration refers to the anthropomorphic forms of ancient sculptures that were erected for celebratory purposes, in particular, the idea comes from the moais of Easter Island. The moai, sculpted by the Polynesians as far back as 1000 AD, are part of a large ceremonial complex (more than 600 statues on the island). In most cases they are monolithic statues, that is, obtained and excavated from a single block of volcanic tuff; the most common meaning handed down by the current Maori descendants is to be auspicious monoliths, bearers of well-being and prosperity where they turn their gaze. For this reason, on Easter Island they are all turned inwards, to protect the earth and those who lived there.

With I Guardiani, therefore, I want to propose a process of miniaturization of design, which from the enormous dimensions is transformed into a design within reach of man and his home. The lines used are stylized, essential, but also intuitive and empathic: the drawn faces and the features aim to establish direct contact with the interlocutor trying to convey positivity by arousing playful and sympathetic emotions. The central body, which is made entirely of metal like the arms, is set in a hard stone base, while smaller precious stones, carefully chosen for their energy qualities, make up the eyes, mouth and hands. These objects can be used alone, as ornaments, or as real flower vases. They observe and watch over the entire house, bringing luck and purifying the environments.

The first variant (size in cm 42x46x17) is characterized by the use of White Quartz, Red Jasper and Lapis Lazuli.

According to the ancient Greeks, White Quartz was ice, formed at very low temperatures while the Shamans of the indigenous tribes called it "Stone of Light", believing that it came directly from the sky. In all cultures, this crystal has always been considered a mineral with magical and therapeutic powers. It was often used to cure diseases, to expel negative energies, and to infuse the person with strength and vital energy. It gives calm, peace and serenity.

The Red Jasper, on the other hand, is considered the stone that rekindles passion and gives creativity. It helps to connect with the earth and increase fertility, while also giving strength and endurance.

Lapis Lazuli has an intense blue color that recalls that of the sky while the gold-colored veins are the stars. Lapis Lazuli means "blue stone", it is in fact one of the most famous blue gemstones. Among its many properties, known since the fifth century, is that of enhancing the abilities of the intellect, making the mind more curious and lively. It helps to bring out a sense of friendship, compassion, honesty in a person and to take note of one's beliefs. In Buddhism it is even considered one of the seven treasures.

In the second variant (size in cm 46x31x18) White Quartz, Flowered Malachite and Amethyst are used.

Malachite is one of the best known stones, it often appears in legends throughout history. Represents seduction, beauty and aesthetic sense. It was for Isis, for example, the most important Egyptian Goddess or even for Persephone, the Greek Goddess of spring. Malachite is for many a regenerative symbol, because its beautiful green recalls the beauty of nature. It absorbs negative energies from the environment and strengthens the body by increasing self-awareness.

Amethyst was already known in ancient Egyptian times and in Mesopotamia, where it was used to make precious jewels and seals. Even Greeks and Romans knew its beauty and properties, so much so that they made precious cups from which they tasted the wine. According to the beliefs of the time, amethyst contrasted intoxication, in fact the Greek term améthystos means "not intoxicated". According to crystal therapy, amethyst has many properties, first of all the ability to ward off nightmares by increasing dream activity. It also strengthens self-control, self-esteem and inner strength; has a calming and reassuring effect.

In the third variant (size in cm 32x16x14) the white Quartz, Rose Quartz and Celestine stone are used.

Rose quartz is considered the stone of calm as it allows you to relax the mind and serves to face the challenges of life, it helps to live lightly. Rose quartz was also used in Egypt to preserve youth, beauty and love. Increase compassion, tolerance and generosity. It is a stone that dissolves tensions and leads the person to feel at one with the Universe. It is no coincidence that this mineral is also considered the heart of Mother Earth.

Finally, the Celestine owes its name to the color and traditionally was considered a link with the celestial realms. Celestine or celestite is one of the most powerful stones when it comes to connecting to the spiritual realms. This stone is also very popular with those who often need to mitigate the chaos of the mind or calm their fears, since thanks to the high frequency vibrations that spread in every direction, it emits a soft and positive energy favoring the feeling of peace.

The body of all three guardians is made of sheet metal with precious finishes: brushed copper, delabrè aluminum, brushed brass and verdigris. In addition, the same glossy version finishes are used in contrast to create part of the headgear.

The project also refers to the manufacturing process as it is designed with a view to modularity with the aim of enhancing the complete use of waste and components for a more eco-sustainable cycle of production.

In fact, starting from a flared cylinder it is possible to obtain two vases of the first type with a simple longitudinal cut. While to create the other two guardians (medium and small in height) we proceed as for the first, practicing, in addition, a transversal cut at a predetermined height according to the project. In this way, a total of four other pieces are obtained to be used as basic bodies.

Contemporaneity and antiquity, technology and nature, connection with the past and vision of the present are the main themes that we want to explore with the design of these artifacts that become furnishing objects, vases, sculptures, visually expressing soul and empathy: a set of relationships which lead us to reconnect with nature and history, and which do not allow a definitive location of the object, remaining in the balance between art and design.
