Millstone. Closing the Circle

The installation continues my project "People's Path," investigating the cyclicity of time, repetition, and the transformation of the individual and the collective. The starting point is the palindrome SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS as a metaphor for the closed circle. I also read it as a symbolic division of roles: the masculine principle — the act of sowing and impulse; the feminine — cultivation, transformation and holding.

At the center stands a genuine antique millstone (approximately 150 years old), a bearer of manual labour’s memory; from it emanate ears of grain — seeds I planted last year that have sprouted and become a living continuation of the story. The structure rotates and is fitted with four scythes; I and the audience become parts of the shared motion, and as we spin we merge into one another: a torsion field arises and we unite into a single energy of all‑covering love and light — as in the film The Fifth Element — where a new world is born, a new seed.

As an artist I feel like a mother, responsible for growing my child — art — and guiding it in the right direction. Augmented reality adds another layer: by pointing a smartphone at the millstone, the viewer sees the birth of the seed — from the ancient stone to a glowing sprout and ear — joining past, present and future.
