Iris is the second work in Five Corridors from the Brown Wall. After the scented atmosphere of Sweet Cicely, Iris gathers into purple weight. The flowers are moist and staining; as dead heads are plucked from the stiff stems, they leave the fingers purple. They hold their shape for a long time, until they begin to shrivel into that wet purple fist.
The Brown Wall remains constant, but the subject changes state. Here the flowers are dense, bodily, and watchful: purple mass, stem, vase, shadow, and light coming together as something that feels almost like a black eye looking back.
