The painting Purple Bay is inspired by Pfeiffer Beach on the California coast, renowned for its extraordinary purple sand created by manganese-rich rocks washed down the cliffs. Rather than depicting the landscape literally, I wanted to evoke its distinctive atmosphere—the cool Pacific light, the meeting of land and sea, and the sense of solitude and wonder that makes the place unforgettable.
Bold areas of violet, turquoise, coral and deep blue replace naturalistic colour, transforming the scene into an emotional landscape. Through simplified forms and carefully constructed planes of light and shadow, I combine the graphic clarity of Pop Art with the luminous atmosphere of Impressionism. For me, Purple Bay is not simply a painting about a beach; it is about shared silence, resilience and the quiet strength found in moments of contemplation beside the sea.
