I approached foreign residents living in Japan and created portraits with the aim of engaging with as many people as possible. By layering acrylic paint over silkscreen prints and then printing another layer, the work records traces of exchanges that transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries.
She is from the Philippines, and I met her near Hachiko Square in Shibuya. She was warm and approachable, kindly listening to my imperfect English and responding with a blight smile.
