I approached foreign residents living in Japan and created portraits with the aim of engaging with as many people as possible. By layering acrylic paint over silkscreen prints and then printing another layer, the work records traces of exchanges that transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries.
She is from Australia, and she visited the clothing store in Shinjuku where I work.
After talking about the shop, I asked if I could drew her portrait. She instantly struck a pose, as if ready for the moment.
She wore stylish clothes, and her refined appearance gave the impression that she is constantly exploring her own way of self expression.
