After graduating Cum Laude in Art Textiles at the Florence Fine Art Academy, Jules Vissers (born in the Netherlands) fulfilled her life-long dream to start an artistic career. Previously, Vissers, who also studied Languages and Internation Law, worked for the Dutch Foreign Office in Milan, Italy. In January 2021 she founded Atelier Taftique in the historical centre of Florence. Here she designs and creates unique textile artworks, characterized by their three-dimensionality and the application of various techniques, both traditional and innovative. Her recent work combines a variety of techniques and materials in every piece, turning yarn and stitch into intricate tapestries, that reinterpret Florence’s ancient traditions. Her style combines abstraction and figuration, making use of textile techniques such as hand-tufting, embroidery, fiber emballage, felting, weaving and crochet. Her artworks are made with local high-quality Italian yarns, using natural as well as recycled fibres.

Jules finds inspiration in many aspects of life: the nature surrounding her in Tuscany made her start a series of artworks on Mediterranean Pine Trees. The Renaissance architecture in Italy inspired her Venezia collection. Her frequent visits to art museums made her fall in love with early 20th century artistic movements such as Cubism and Art Deco, inspiring the creation of her collections Rhythm of Flowers and Wings of Change. In these past five years, she already won various awards and recognitions, including the Lorenzo il Magnifico Prize at the Florence Biennale 2021 and 2023, the European Textile and Craft Award from the European Textile Academy in Bolzano in 2024 and a finalist spot at the LVMH Masters of Excellence Prize in Milan. Extensive reviews of her work have appeared in important art magazines such as “Finestre sull’Arte”, “Exibart” and “Art Market Magazine”. According to Vissers, “As long as there is movement, there is life and in my work I try to give form to that motion through the interaction between colour, shape and texture." You feel it in the flowing forms, the layered textures, the deliberate colour choices. Each piece is built patiently, from sketch to cloth, from front to back, secured, cut and refined until motion settles into form.
