Son Jiyoung graduated from Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Versailles in France in 2020 , and is currently enrolled in a master’s program at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He has been working actively since his first group exhibition, 《7ème Fête de l’Estampe》 (Ecole des beaux-arts de Versailles, Versailles, France)in 2019, and recently participated in 《Carte à mémoire》(Glassbox, Paris, France) and 《Le salon》(La ville A des Arts, Paris, France).
After majoring in animation in Korea, Son went to France to study and explore the power of images and new perspectives of looking at objects, together with other formative languages. He works in the form of archive-making, based on stories that exist in the relations among objects, which he portrays through moving images and stopped moments. The artist’s process of art begins by asking about the relationship between an object and society, through discarded objects. To this end he uses, as his main material, objects of memory that are easily damaged or neglected, re-combining them with other materials to transform them into shapes that can be perceived as different existences. He brings out a new perspective on personal history and object-based common notions, and blows life into forgotten and discarded objects of the memory. Moreover, he searches for a form that can share this with spectators and transform it into common memory. He also explores methods to broaden the scope of sharing, by transforming the act of reading memories and records originating from the objects of others, into objet not just in material form, but also in intangible form, such as digital.
