I was born in
Bangladesh and later adopted Greek nationality. My education in India and the
USA deeply influenced my multifaceted artistic vision, which transcends
geographical and cultural boundaries. My 'hyper-eclectic' abstract paintings
blend historical and contemporary insights with incisive socio-economic and
political commentary, while utilizing a heuristic approach akin to scientific
inquiry to explore further possibilities within the genre of painting.
After earning a
BFA from Clark University in 1996, I moved to New York, where I exhibited my
work in alternative spaces and received a grant from Artist Space. In 2000, I
relocated to Athens, where I participated in curated group exhibitions and held
my second solo exhibition, "Painting…," at the Statement gallery in
2003. Following a twenty-year hiatus due to family commitments, I have recently
returned my art with, with a solo exhibition "Painting Beyond
Painting" at Alibi Gallery in Athens in June 2024.
Though my
artistic roots are in figurative art, I gravitated towards abstraction. As I
delved deep into painting essence and its history I uncovered various
untraversed conceptual dimensions. This led me to discover my interactive
magnetic paintings while living in New York. Later, I confronted the "end
of painting fallacy,” where black/white were the presumed finality of
abstraction and created my "Colorless paintings," by abandoning
pigmentation in paintings and making painting totally colorless with transparent
and translucent mediums. Further exploration drove me to also investigate the
physicality of paint where I allowed the paint material to form its own
surface, by itself, without the requirement of any base or a canvas, hence the
“Surfaceless Paintings.”
Inspired by the
daring experimentation of the Modernists, my abstract compositions not only pay
tribute to their legacy but also offer profound allegorical insights into
contemporary complexities. I aim to innovate beyond mere appropriation,
embracing the paradoxes of my cultural identity and the zeitgeist, thus evoking
a 'global' spirit of innovation that resonates universally, inviting reflection
and participation within the artistic discourse.
