Born in Shanghai in 1985, Fu Youyou moved to the United Kingdom in 2003 to pursue her studies. In 2006, she entered Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art, Design and Environment. In 2010, she worked at EMBT Architects, during which time she gradually began creating her own artistic works. Initially aspiring to become a published novelist, she eventually self-published a collection of spatial design essays, Nomadic Britain. This experience ignited her creative drive, and from 2012 onward, she has dedicated herself to the creation and expression of contemporary painting.
For over a decade, Fu Youyou has employed surrealist narrative approaches to explore the artistic expression of feminine sensibility. Her practice encompasses contemporary conceptual art that uses 3D materials as a medium — exploring the dismantling and reassembly of matter, as well as the significance of materiality’s ultimate form.
Her work is deeply rooted in the ideas and visual language of European modern art and industrial design. Through the interplay of figurative visual elements and surrealist contexts, she realizes her authentic creative vision in the pursuit of concept and temporal-spatial phenomena.
In the current era of intelligent technology, the nature of creativity is being re-examined. Fu Youyou advocates the traditional Eastern philosophy of the unity of knowledge and action — never presupposing a final destination, but rather arriving at a boundless realm through continuous practice and refinement. Thus, her works not only engage with memory and trace but also explore the boundaries of future humanity.
