Biography for Laguna Prize 2026 – Venice
Stefano Modena (born October 3, 1962, in Ancona) is an Italian artist working between Milan and Rome. After a long career in economics, finance, and corporate consulting, he developed an artistic research expressed through the alter ego Aston F. Deane, conceived as a conceptual extension of his visual work. His education—a degree from Bocconi University and over thirty years in multinational contexts between Italy and Spain—profoundly influences his artistic practice. Themes such as structure, system, and control translate into a visual reflection on the relationship between order and deviation, language and perception. Aston F. Deane's identity functions as a critical device: a constructed artist whose plausible biography questions the mechanisms of recognition and authenticity in the art system. His research develops in an abstract and analytical dimension, where line and sign investigate instability, interference, and transformation. The works exist between visual grammar and perceptual field, evoking structures progressively losing coherence. The work uses photographic and digital tools, conceiving images as files and leaving the collector free to determine their medium, scale, and mode of enjoyment. In 2026, he presented the exhibition "Dove nascono le scelte" (Where Choices Are Made) during Milan Art Week, under the patronage of Municipio 1 of the City of Milan. His academic and editorial activities—university professor, journalist, and author on governance, geopolitics, and digital transformation—contribute to an interdisciplinary approach between art and critical thinking. Through Aston F. Deane, Stefano Modena develops research that questions not only the image, but the system that produces and interprets it.
