Rearview Memories is an interactive installation features car rearview mirrors integrated with motion-tracking devices. Each mirror carries an inscription that paraphrases the familiar car mirror warning “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.” In this work, however, the message reads: "Events from the past are closer than they appear.” The word "Events" shifts from mirror to mirror into: Choices, Wounds, Secrets, People, Dreams, Feelings, Lovers, evoking different dimensions of memory and suggesting the many ways in which the past continues to resonate in the present, even when you try to escape it.
The mirrors track visitors, subtly following their movements and reflecting their image back to them, creating a quiet confrontation with the self. The work speaks to the weight of unresolved experiences (regret, guilt, avoidance) and to the ways in which unprocessed events shapes our emotional landscape.
In a time marked by anxiety, accelerated digital lives, and a culture of distraction, Rearview Memories addresses emotional health as a contemporary urgency. The installation invites viewers to pause, acknowledge, and engage in an act of awareness, suggesting that healing begins not with escape, but with recognition and conscious reflection.
