Potrebbe costruire qualsiasi musica.
Silence (Silenzio) is an installation.
It consists of a tile-shaped device containing an internal mechanical mechanism that could emit a sound, which it cannot emit because it is enclosed within a sealed display case.
This tile was created in 1998 as a prototype for my thesis in Architecture: a mechanical module capable of producing a single, autonomous, distinct note, like an independent musical cell. A combination of multiple tiles could have constructed an extended sonic space, a sort of musical surface where every step became a composition, a potential landscape of sounds.
Today, however, I re-interpret it in another form—no longer as a project of activation, but as something denied.
Its function remains suspended: it is a tile that contains a single note that it does not emit. It is a latent presence, held back, silent.
Together with others, it could even compose a symphony.
It could build any music.
And yet it is alone, there, with its single note—which exists, but does not allow itself to be heard.
This suspension also reflects a broader condition: that which each of us carries within as a potential for expression, as a voice or a sound, which does not always find the moment, the space, or the permission to manifest itself.
The tile, then, is not just a sonic object, but a silent threshold:
a sound that exists, but is never fulfilled.
