Whilst experimenting with different shapes and strengths of magnets, I discovered a sculptural potential for representing power dynamics. The rapid reversal of polarity during the experiment embodied a kind of right to determine. My intention was to create a situation in which two components inevitably collide and interact via magnetic force.
One part is rhythmically controlled using a mechanism similar to that in 3D printing, whilst the other follows these movement instructions. When they meet, different forms of movement arise due to varying speeds. These more precisely define the modes of determination of the magnetic wheel. Both parts of the sculpture are made of Alucobond, a lightweight, stable composite panel of plastic and aluminium with a technoid appearance.
This material and the control technology also allude to the increasing use of digital instruments to determine, measure and calculate aspects of the human body. Furthermore, the work explores the relationships between power and subservience, dependence and determination.
This construction of a systematic, closed juxtaposition seeks to explore the advantages, disadvantages and consequences for the respective parties within hierarchical structures.
