« Ce qui est caché dans le visible est le secret du visible lui-même »
Maurice Merleau-Ponty, 1923
“What is concealed in the visible is the secret of the visible itself.”
As humans we appear to be able to walk through the depths of time.
We developed an ability to realize how time, space, and matter managed to form a living connection here on Earth in a history of everything with everything: from the Big Bang to our own heartbeat and breathing now, at this moment.
It's up to us how we experience ourselves in what's happening around us. Just like we experience our relationship with deep time, we are able to feel our influence on what awaits us. After all, life is a relational entity. How do we relate to the constantly changing dynamics of powers and forces within and around us? What keeps us busy, what are we concerned with, what do we have to do and how?
As Artistduo work#art using the power of our artworks we strive to entrust ourselves, beyond what we believe as possible. In that way each moment unfolds, balancing itself a life like a work of art. Beyond all doom-mongering, animated in contact with matter, and inspired by the people around us. It depends on whether we approach ‘the future’ apocalyptically or whether we develop it from our own capacity to the revelation of a viable event.
The times we live in have undeniably entered a new phase. Here, the focus of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy suddenly offers us the power of a magnifying glass. Within it, we imagine ourselves in an interstitio with a surface tension that constantly demands to be broken open to search for a new coherence.
Serendipity is a key here together with poetry and fundamental scientific research. With these keys, we are completely open to whatever comes our way. Simple things develop a radiance we'd never experienced before. Behind it, a vibrant world appears to lie, also open to us. What we're after is, so to speak, like a child eager to be chosen at a sports event: "I want to participate," "let me participate." In this way we come close to a coherence that in fact wants to realize itself and is constantly developing.
Every moment as a phase within a coherent whole.
It's up to us as a duo to form the key to connect these phases as "states of being," so that they gradually come into their own. In this interplay of resonance and attention, we are "doing." It offers, for example, the focus to immediately wrap that lead roll (see photos), while that lead roll immediately grabs me.
In this coherence, everything is intermediary. Is our relationship as a duo a catalyst in it? Is that a speck of matter, a speck of energy, an idea that drives us? You cannot define the origin of your own contribution to collective consciousness in advance. All understanding is under pressure. The "post-truth era" in which we live ensures that truth has given way to spectacle. How can we, now that reality seems more absurd than ever, best question the appropriate balance in the dynamics of each moment?
Just as in quantum mechanics, every momentum only reveals itself when you make a choice. A practical choice, to be precise. Art is practice, and life is tasting, testing. Including ourselves. Where we stand, in what we do. How we let it be?
In that ambiguous ambivalence, we vibrate and seek a new resonance.
This is how we taste it and test it in its own urgency and current relevance in every moment.
As a site-specific installation, we like “like this" to be seen as a work in progress. What you see here are the basic elements.
For instance : in the coming days we make foots for both columns, and piano hammers for the sound they produce. We will be working with light and sound. Work on this continues unabated, and if Arte Laguna invites us for 2025, the follow-up work will move to the Arsenale as a new phase in the development of this work.
