Ars longa. Vita brevis.
This artwork by work#art was developed to inspire the presentation of the municipal cultural policy document for the Hanseatic city of Kampen.
The accompanying text accompanied the image:
Essentially, our work moves across the end grain of the pages from which one thinks a content can be read. Formulations like formulas on both sides of a page, extending to the spine of the book you opened.
Our wish for this Policy Document:
Let it be a "hand of choice" with which you turn the page.
Living together is an experiment every moment. Culture a reflective adventure. And our life a work of art that emerges from the tension between thumb and index finger,
from the ink that leaves your pen. And thus describes a life.
Let us then describe culture as a ship, navigating the dynamics of the tide in which it finds itself. A ship that creates a bow wave with its bow and stern waves with its rudder. Taking into account, yet simultaneously cutting across, the expectations people harbor. Elsewhere is a horizon, not a point!
They say that before entering the sea,
a river trembles with fear.
It looks back at the path
it has traveled, from the peaks,
the mountains, the long, winding road
that crosses forests and villages [...].
Only by entering the ocean
will fear disappear,
because only then
will the river know that it is not about
disappearing into the ocean,
but about becoming an ocean. Khalil Gibran, Le Prophète, 1923.
Keep on going now... Here's an image from the wake side.
* The final photo added to this entry, is of our work: "Goud op Snee" (Gold on Cut).
Following the aforementioned research, the municipality of Kampen purchased the work as a permanent reminder of the sensitive task it has to perform as a government, including developing cultural policy.
