intervention invading network by Irene Anton
The basic idea for these interventions is based on a recycling idea to
create a new net-like installation out of run-mesh pantyhose. My networks
reflect and interpret current contemporary phenomena, such as globalization and
the World Wide Web with its dynamic, constantly changing network as a
"global brain", as well as processes in our body and especially the
brain, in which a complex network of neuron connections controls our thought
processes and the course of movement.
The organic networks can also be compared
to delicate organisms made of cell structures - consisting of highly flexible
but at the same time vulnerable materials. Organic growth processes can also
manifest themselves in growths that occupy the body and invasively interfere
with normal bodily functions (just as in computer technology the Internet can be
interfered with by viruses and other devastating disruptors; the system is
difficult to figure out).
Each new network is an adaptation to a new location;
they occupy and intervene in a location-specific way in ever new
constellations, just as the connections in the brain also change constantly in
the course of a lifetime. At least one colored "disturbance factor"
is built into each of the net, making contrast with its surroundings, and symbolizing the error(s) in the system.
A
network undergoes a metamorphosis in two ways, on the one hand by recycling and
transforming banal objects such as tights into a complex network, and on the
other hand, each network is permeated by one or more colour gradients.
The
installations show networks, which are made of approximately hundred to
hundred and twenty almost recycled and tied pairs of tights, partly filled with
balls that will define the (ganglion)knots of the network. Even though from
time to time I have to buy new tights for the following networks with new
colour concepts, the tights are always re-used again until they are
completely broken. Every network is a new site-specific adaption to the space
where it is shown. My networks are every time occupying and conquering spaces
in a new way and constellation. Since 2006 'intervention invading network' has
been shown in several European and overseas exhibitions.
