“Havening” is a sculpture on layers of part, created as part of a collection that explores the theme of love and embrace.
Touch is a vital sense of our lives, and human touch has been deprived in the last years due to the global pandemic. As a personal exploration on touch I created this series of pieces, all made on layers of paper which have been cut separately, layer by layer and then assembled by hand to create “human topographies”. This series in particular features a background in gold leaf of 24k.
“Havening” means to put into a safe place, and it is referred as the act to hug, love and protect oneself.
My work is based on the analysis of the three-dimensional qualities of the human body and its relation to geography. By portraying people in the same way that architects represent terrains, I have developed a formal, aesthetic vocabulary to create what I call "human topographies".
I use this technique to represent people in both realistic and surreal style, in which the main topic is the human expression.
By mixing science and art, observation and imagination, I pay homage to individual expression and what it might mean to each subject. This has led me to create pieces that speak about gender, race and equality. My main goal as an artist is to create art pieces that open spaces for dialogue in favor of the respect of human diversity.
Paper, my preferred material, embodies the paradoxical qualities that we see in nature: its fragility and durability, its strength and delicacy; qualities that we can also find in each one of us.
Process and material are crucial; the paper pieces are dissected from sheet after sheet of paper in careful scientific fashion with a scalpel knife. The large permanent installations are created in multiple durable materials; to extend the life span of the ideals behind each art piece.
