Bearing Witness

Bearing Witness is a construction pastiche built from reclaimed cardboard, transformed

photographic fragments and resin lens with type. Through layering, interruption, and reconstruction, the portrait becomes a

meditation on memory, survival, and the responsibility to acknowledge human experience. The

fragmented figure exists between presence and absence, suggesting that identity is shaped not

only by what is visible but also by what has been endured.

The work does not depict a single individual or event. Instead, it considers the universal act of

bearing witness—to violence, loss, resilience, and the quiet persistence of the human spirit. The

weathered materials retain evidence of time and use, allowing the physical surface to function as

both artifact and metaphor.

By reconstructing discarded materials into a contemporary portrait, the work invites viewers to

reflect on the enduring traces carried within individuals and communities, and on the fragile yet

persistent nature of remembrance.
