EMERGENCE
Emergence is a collection of knitted tapestries created in 2025 and presented as an exhibition. The works combine textile production with the visual language of pixel art. Each pixel is formed through yarn, and every point in the image emerges from the intersection of threads. What appears digital from a distance is, on closer inspection, entirely constructed through a physical textile process.
The project is based on the idea of emergence: a complex image appears only when many small and individually limited parts come together. A single thread does not know the pattern it helps to create, just as one pixel cannot reveal the complete image. Meaning appears through their connection.
By bringing together tapestry, associated with traditional craftsmanship, and pixel art, associated with digital culture, the collection connects two systems that seem to belong to different periods but are built according to a similar logic. Both create images from small repeated units. Their combination reflects a reality in which digital space, games, memory and physical material increasingly overlap.
Within this world appears the fictional story of collector Katarri and artist Jacqueline Ano. Katarri presents what is described as the unconscious world of Ano, reconstructed through fragments of her visual memory. Her recurring black-and-white cow patterns are traced back to an early accident in which white clay mixed with a small piece of black. The pattern later passed from childhood drawings into her imagined worlds of cows moving through space.
This fictional narrative extends the structure of the tapestries themselves. Separate fragments, memories, pixels and threads gradually form a larger image, while no individual part can fully understand the whole to which it belongs.
