Created in 2002 and revisited in 2019, this piece draws inspiration from a pixelated photograph. The artist's decision to recreate this self-portrait years later imbues it with a profound commentary on our increasingly digitized world and the ways we are perceived through technology.
"This is the first portrait I ever painted, and also a self-portrait. It dates from 2002 and is inspired by a pixelated photo. In 2019, I decided to return to this motif and paint a self-portrait 17 years later in the same way. This took on new meaning with the proliferation of facial recognition technology, which now allows us to be seen in this very way. From this self-portrait diptych, the idea for an entire series titled "ID" was born, in which portraits are the dominant element. But there are only two self-portraits."
