Named after the masterpiece by Théodore Géricault, depicting an actual event of a devastating shipwreck and subsequent cannibalism by the survivors. The story goes that Géricault used actual dead bodies and body parts as studies in order to give his painting a more realistic depiction of death and violence. This painting contains none of that. This image was sourced from my youtube "recommended" page and cropped to reflect this composition. It depicts a group of improv actors on a set, with a raft on a stage and a fake seascape backdrop, and an image of Morrissey in one of his music videos. This image is meant to reflect the superficiality of our digital, algorithmically generated worlds, and its efforts to distance us from real experience and each other.
