"Racing thoughts" presents an imagined portrait of a woman that is an attempt to portray myself, even though the figure does not resemble me at all. The painting becomes more of a visualization of inner confusion than a classic self-portrait.
The composition is rendered in a realistic, Renaissance-inspired style, referring to tradition, elegance, and the classical ideal of beauty. The only element that breaks away from this harmony is the figure’s violently windswept hair. Its unnatural movement symbolizes the intense whirlwind of thoughts that accompanied me at the end of a relationship — an overwhelming flood of emotions and reflections so strong that, metaphorically, it seems to set the air in motion. It is precisely this contrast between the calm form of the portrait and the dynamic chaos of the hair that creates the tension present throughout the work.
