"Onions have layers" depicts me, although my identity remains almost completely hidden beneath layers of fabrics, decorations, and a mask. The title refers to the famous quote from Shrek, which, in a playful yet fitting way, corresponds with the theme of the work. The painting speaks about the experience of being in a relationship in which I tried to adapt to someone else’s idea of the ideal woman. The successive layers of clothing become a metaphor for the traits, gestures, and ways of being that I adopted in order to become more attractive in his eyes.
Despite this external construction, my inner core remains untouched. The sphynx cat I am holding serves as a contrast: it is naked, devoid of costume or fur, and pretends to be nothing other than itself. The Renaissance styling of the painting refers to tradition, elegance, and the classical ideal of beauty, which were important to my former partner.
A note for the size - given measurements are without the frame; considering the frame, it is 70 x 90 cm.
