This artwork is composed of two paintings. The first painting is a large painting (132 x 151 cm) depicting a cloud of dust under a microscope. The other painting is a tiny panel(3.5x 4 cm)depicting a mountain where I collected the dust. Mountain is supposed to be larger than a cloud of dust, but I painted it really small.
It is based on Zhuangzi’s idea of “nothing is smaller than a mountain whereas nothing is larger than a hair”. Values such as large or small, beautiful or ugly are depended on the perspective that we chose.
Zhuangzi’s attitudes not only influence my value, but also my art style. For example, I like to use grey, because grey itself is ambiguous and uncertain. I avoid using black and white to mix grey. To get the desired “grey”, I mix white with red and green, blue and brown. It is to question if this “grey “is not a color between black and white, can it still be regarded as grey.
